Toronto Jazz Piano Lessons for Adults

2025-02-10 - Alvin

Hello, my name is Alvin, and I’m a jazz pianist and saxophonist based in Toronto. I have over 10 years of music industry experience performing and creating jazz, pop, R&B, and classical music. During my undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia, where I focused on both classical and jazz music, I developed a deep passion for music education. Teaching has allowed me to share my love for music with students of all ages, helping them grow as musicians and discover their unique sound.

What You’ll Learn in My Lessons

My teaching approach is rooted in building a strong foundation while encouraging creativity and self-expression.

Here’s what you can expect to learn:

Reading Music & Music Theory – I’ll guide you through understanding sheet music, rhythms, and key signatures, making it easier to play your favorite songs and improve your sight-reading skills.

Chords & Harmony – Whether you’re playing jazz, pop, or classical music, mastering chords is essential. I’ll teach you how to build and voice chords, recognize progressions, and apply them to real music.

Improvisation & Playing by Ear – Jazz and contemporary music thrive on improvisation. I’ll help you develop the skills to play freely, create your own solos, and understand how to listen and respond musically in any setting.

Repertoire & Style Development – We’ll explore different styles, from jazz standards to modern pop, helping you shape your personal sound and musical identity.

Accompaniment & Performance Skills – For pianists, I’ll show you how to accompany singers and instrumentalists, enhancing your ability to perform with others. For saxophonists, we’ll focus on phrasing, tone, and articulation to develop a strong, expressive sound.

Above all, my goal is to make learning music fun, inspiring, and rewarding.
